We get to see many container homes, but it’s an innovative US one that has caught our eye this month.
The c-Home, designed by architectural firm LOT-EK, is a family residence in Claverack, New York. It comprises six recycled 40-foot containers – three side-by-side on each of the two levels, providing a massive 178 square metres of living space.
The home has an open layout, with the living area, dining space and kitchen on the ground floor. Two sets of stairs lead up to two bedroom suites. Each bedroom has its own full bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.
Large glass walls provide plenty of natural light, and there is also cross ventilation. And it’s the angled glass cutting across the metal containers on the diagonal that adds visual punch to this project.
The diagonal is repeated inside the house, where the walls of the containers have been sliced through to make a single large space. In places, shelving is added to “square up” the openings.
The living space is extended to the outdoors, where large decks on both sides of the house provide ample space for outdoor entertaining.
And then there is the green roof deck, which is accessed by an external staircase.
The company doesn’t mention the price, but the cost of a Grand Designs NZ build four years ago featuring a house built using 20 20-foot containers was up around $836,000, with work still to be completed. That couple paid about $2800 for each container, which then needed to be insulated.
Specialist container home company IQ Container Homes in New Zealand offers a three-bedroom, two-storey fully insulated home utilising two 40-foot containers and two 20-foot containers (top) for $334,000.
