Anthony “The Man” Mundine has shaken off his recent defeat in the boxing ring against fellow world champion Danny Green to lay down an impressive $2.16 million for a dilapidated Redfern terrace.

Mundine beat a handful of registered bidders to secure the three-storey terrace that is ripe for extensive renovations.

Mundine’s purchase of a major property renovation comes just months after his father, legendary boxer Tony Mundine, closed the doors of his long-held gym to make way for developers.

Peter Goros and Steve Kremisis, of Richardson & Wrench Newtown, had a guide of $1.75 million to $1.9 million ahead of the auction on the deceased estate, and a well-placed mole in the room said it was declared on the market some $200,000 before it sold under the hammer.

Mundine didn’t bid on the property himself but was on hand to sign contracts once the auction was over.

Mundine’s best home DIY skills will be needed on the eight-bedroom, one-bathroom property (formerly run as an unregistered boarding house) that was billed in the marketing as a “perfect opportunity for a renovator/builder”.

His purchase comes as he makes plans for his life after boxing, forming a building company this year with former rugby league players Amos Roberts and Gosh “The Siren” Daher, who have established careers in the building industry.

In announcing the Mossy Gosh Mundine (MGM) venture on Facebook, Daher said: “I’ve been in the building industry over 20 years owning my own business and decided also to team up with two of my best mates, Amos and Anthony.

“In forming this Aboriginal company I know anything is possible with these two elite athletes. It’s all about having a go.”

And Mundine now has just the place to start.
