Retired tennis star Ash Barty and her golfer husband, Garry Kissick, are selling her home away from home, listing the renovated townhouse with price hopes of $1.85 million to $2 million.

Barty paid $1.88 million for the three-bedroom, two bathroom residence in the inner Melbourne suburb of South Yarra in 2022, public records show.

The sporting power couple live in Queensland but bought the home as a Melbourne base, given their travels for work, says Jellis Craig listing agent Nathan Waterson.

But once they had their son, the couple were not travelling as often, he said, and now they were expecting a second child.

“They’re looking to spend more family time in their home state,” Waterson said.

He said the couple had renovated the home, particularly the kitchen and bathroom areas.

“It’s now the type of property that will appeal to a professional couple or downsizer and it’s really a home now that you don’t need to spend any money on,” he said.

“Whereas before it was an opportunity for somebody to add some value, which Ash has done.”

He said it could also suit a young family given its proximity to schools, and praised its floor plan, parking, and location at the quiet end of Nicholson Street.

The median house price in South Yarra is $1.88 million, according to Domain data, down 14.5 per cent in the 12 months to December.

The property will go to auction on March 1, when the sellers will no doubt be hoping it surpasses the lower end of the price guide and recoups their costs. Stamp duty on a purchase of this size would have been about $103,000, according to Victoria’s State Revenue office calculator.

Barty previously held the world No.1 ranking for a streak of 114 weeks in a row and won the French Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open.

At age 25, she retired from tennis to Brookwater, near Ipswich, west of Brisbane, designing her dream home and later starting a family.

Barty also bought a pad in a boutique apartment development in Palm Beach on the Gold Coast, reportedly spending close to $4 million.
