Auction watch: A new suburb record for Florey

Auction watch: Canberra market gathers pace

From a 1930s art-deco home to a bespoke contemporary design, strong architectural statements were responsible for some of Saturday’s top auction results.

A Philip Leeson-designed house at 50 Schlich Street in Yarralumla sold under the hammer for $2.4 million – the biggest sale of the day.

It was characterised by sleek architectural lines and a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Peter Blackshaw Manuka agent Mario Sanfrancesco said there were seven registered bidders, with two parties battling it out when the bidding climbed above the $2 million mark.

“It’s another example of the strength of a good quality property in a great location such as Yarralumla,” Mr Sanfrancesco said.

A two-bedroom house on a quiet O’Connor street attracted 12 registered bidders, drawn to the 882-square-metre block and the character of the home.

It was the first time 4 Ross Street had been offered for sale since it was built in the 1950s.

Sandstone feature walls, timber flooring and private landscaped gardens were among the property’s defining features.

Six parties placed a bid and the home sold under the hammer for $1,136,000.

McGrath Dickson director Maree van Arkel said the vendors were “absolutely ecstatic” with the result.

A mid-century modern house at 11 Waller Crescent in Campbell attracted a crowd of 60 and four registered bidders.

Peter Blackshaw Manuka agent Debbie Maddigan said more than 150 groups attended open homes throughout the course of the campaign.

Designed by architect Neville Ward, the U-shaped house was nestled under a gumtree canopy.

An opening bid of $1 million was placed and fast-paced bidding between two parties pushed the price above $1.4 million.

A phone bidder entered the fray, placing a bid of $1,455,000. However, the hammer fell on $1,458,000 and sold to the opening bidder.

In the neighbouring suburb of Reid about 80 people gathered to watch a heritage-listed home at 14 Geerilong Gardens sell for $1.81 million.

Original features included parquetry flooring, timber details and open fireplaces.

Luton Properties Canberra City director James Carter said the leafy location on the fringe of the city was highly sought after.

Saturday’s auction clearance rate of 79 per cent was the same as last week’s, according to Domain Group data.
