There’s undoubtedly a sense of romance attached to the idea of a country winery.
You can easily imagine hectares of lush, sun-kissed, grape-laden vines stretching over the landscape, with perhaps a tasting room where visitors inhale the latest vintage, noses deep into their glasses. In this daydream, there might also be an outdoor winery luncheon on a long table groaning with bottles, cheeses, cured meats, olives and chunks of freshly baked bread.
That dream could become a reality for someone looking to translate their lifestyle into that of a vigneron and country landowner. Murrumbateman’s Jeir Creek Wines presents that opportunity to become part of this popular winemaking region and culture.
This 16-hectare property is in a picture postcard setting – with views that stretch toward the Brindabellas – where Jeir Creek has flourished into one of the region’s best-known wineries over the past 40 years.
That’s no surprise given its award-winning range of wines, including sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, chardonnay, grenache, shiraz, muscat and more. They’re part of the reason for its role as a popular favourite stop on local winery tours that boost its cellar door sales.
The current owners also strongly focus on sustainability, preferring to avoid using herbicides along with a practice of hand harvesting. This philosophy has extended to planting vineyard cover crops to increase biodiversity while other plantings attract pest-hungry insects. An onsite winery enables those hand-picked grapes to be processed immediately with a reduced need for preservatives.
The property also includes a large, furnished five-bedroom home, perfect for family living or as short-term guest accommodation.
And there’s even land available for grazing stock for those who see the benefits of diversification.
Frank Walmsley of Auction Advantage says the property offers even more upside for new owners.
“There is a pending development application that reflects a vision to take Jeir Creek Wines to the next level,” he says. “That sees a future where it is transformed into a vibrant resort destination that offers accommodation, event spaces and a restaurant.”
Walmsley says this prospect would further diversify the business and maximise its revenue potential.
“It’s an exciting canvas for expansion and growth that would position it to become a premier destination in the Murrumbateman wine region,” he says. “Whether you’re a seasoned winemaker seeking a new venture or an investor with a passion for hospitality, this is your chance to own a piece of Canberra’s culinary and cultural heritage.
“Jeir Creek Wines is positioned to redefine the Murrumbateman appeal in potentially setting a new standard that combines luxury hospitality, culinary excellence, and winemaking innovation.”
For out-of-towners, Murrumbateman is about 47 kilometres north of the Canberra CBD. It once attracted gold miners in the late 1890s, but its history as a wine region dates to the 1970s when CSIRO scientists independently planted vines on land primarily used for sheep grazing.
It is considered an ideal altitude and soil for cool climate wines, and there are now around 20 boutique wineries in the area.
