"Beautifully updated" Campbell home hits the market for first time in 60 years

For almost 60 years, 51 Cobby Street in Campbell has been the heart of one Canberra family’s story. For the current owner, it has been the backdrop for most of her life.

It was the home her parents built back in 1965, engaging renowned Canberra-based German builder Heinz Wese.

Growing up there, the nearby Mount Ainslie quarry was basically the childhood playground for her and her three siblings, and they could watch horses graze in the paddock across the road.

It later became the home where she raised her own children, and it’s now also become a place where her grandchildren can make memories.

The house has witnessed the ebb and flow of four generations, and now this cherished property is on the market for the first time.

Like the family who lived here, the house itself has grown and evolved over the decades.

Originally built as a four-bedroom home, it later gained a pool – no doubt to the delight of the younger residents.

It also underwent a significant extension to add a new wing with a spacious living area and an oversized main bedroom with en suite.

More recently, the home received another renovation, modernising the kitchen and bathrooms while preserving its charm.

Now, with more than 300 square metres of living, it offers both space and versatility. Most of the floor plan falls across a single level, which boasts multiple living areas and five bedrooms, including two with their own en suites.

“There are essentially two master bedrooms, each on the opposite side of the home, which works perfectly for accommodating multigenerational living, or an au pair, or even just a guest wing,” says principal Adam Morgan of AM Property Agency.

Morgan says no expense was spared in the renovation of the kitchen, which covers an area similar in size to a typical Australian living room.

“It has substantial bench space and quality appliances, and it connects to a second living room,” he says, “That then opens up and seamlessly flows to the beautiful outdoor deck and the pool.

“It’s a very substantial home that’s been beautifully updated, and it’s really suited to family living at its core. And it’s the perfect place to entertain, too.”

The lower level offers a double garage, a large storage area, a powder room and a breakout space that could easily serve as a man-cave, pool house, home gym or even a teenage retreat.

Outside, established gardens and hedging offer privacy and seclusion, while that deck and pool area provide a peaceful retreat.

Living on Cobby Street means enjoying Mount Ainslie Reserve and the start of the summit walk just across the road.

“It’s one of Canberra’s premiere spots,” Morgan says.

“You’ve got the advantages of the bush capital, like being on the doorstep of Mount Ainslie and the nature trails.

“And the beautiful native birds always come to the home – the gang gangs and the king parrots visit daily.

“Being opposite the reserve, you also have this beautiful gum-lined outlook from the house. But then you’re also right on the doorstep of the city, without having to be too close to it, with easy access to the airport.

“So it makes for the perfect lifestyle.”
