She started life as the c1905 landmark grand dame on a huge estate, all Edwardian stature with Victorian and art nouveau detail, then Harleston Firs was sub-divided and went from being a hospital to a boarding house to derelict. Rescued 30 years ago and more recently further improved and extended, she’s once again the neighbourhood beauty, replete with pool for contemporary family living.

114 Munnering Lane, Carlton North
$1.6-$1.7 million

The John Lawson Furniture Factory was valued at 60 pounds in 1889; today, as an eclectic warehouse conversion, a little more. Former Melbourne lord mayor Trevor Huggard bought the ruin in 1975, hosted the odd Comedy Festival after-party here then got serious about restoration. He has lived under its soaring trussed ceilings since 2000, and pushed for the lane’s name to honour an Indigenous community leader.

Auction at 2.30pm, on March 25
