A buyer on an oil rig off the coast of Africa has locked down a $1.2 million waterfront Perth apartment.

The far-flung bidder, splashing cash down the phone, is the new owner of the swish pad in Claremont.

He was up at 3am to follow the bidding on the weekend from his workplace – an offshore oil rig, many oceans away.

The buyer had not stepped foot in the property, but his family and friends did the inspections on his behalf, listing agent Deborah Brady, of Ray White Cottesloe/Mosman Park, said in the agency’s weekend auction report.

The property fetched $1.284 million, spurred by three bidders, of the four who registered.

“The buyer had never seen the property in person due to being away for work, but we showed his family and friends through the apartment and he was determined to tune into the auction at 3am local time,” Brady said in the report.

The under bidder for the fifth-floor, water-view apartment was dialing in from a boardroom in Sydney, and the third bidder was Perth local.

Brady said the former rental apartment, high above the bobbing yachts on Freshwater Bay, was refreshed prior to going under the hammer. Auctioneer Mark Whiteman steered proceedings.

“The seller was offloading her investment property; she had it rented out and decided now was the time to sell as the tenants were moving out,” she said.

“We did some painting, installed new carpet and staged it beautifully for sale.”
