A record number of homes could sell under the hammer across Brisbane this weekend with 111 properties plated up for auction amid “unprecedented” buyer interest.

As the city skyrockets towards its biggest housing boom in decades, property punters expect thousands of home hunters to pound the pavement on Saturday and Sunday with rundown cottages through to chic mansions up for grabs in a pre-Easter extravaganza that could clock millions.

Queensland chief auctioneer at Place Estate Agents Peter Burgin said the Place team would plate up dozens of abodes over the coming few days spurred by jaw-dropping levels of home hunters and a widespread seller shift towards auction campaigns — sparking recent auction clearance rates to soar to 82 per cent – more than double the city’s average of previous years.

“[Auctions] are a real sport and people’s general perspective is this market isn’t going to change any time soon and giving up is admitting defeat,” Mr Burgin said.

“If you compare now to the year before (prior to COVID striking) we’d be 200 per cent up on our auctions.

“The auction trend is here to stay. It’s a big shift in thinking in Brisbane and at some point we needed an event like COVID to push us in the same direction as Sydney and Melbourne where a greater volume of the homes hitting the market are going to auction and there’s a greater level of competition.”

Headline homes up for auction across the Place group this Saturday include a spectacular five-bedroom abode with a pool at 89 Erica Street, Cannon Hill (8am onsite through Meagan Muir of Place Estate Agents Bulimba), the exquisite five-bedroom luxury home at 43 Pringle Street in Ascot (2pm onsite through Drew Davies of Place Estate Agents Ascot) and 51 Woodanga Street in Murarrie.

The realisation that Brisbane was in the midst of a rare property boom sparked Sarahjane and Derren Robertson to “take advantage” of soaring prices and sell their sprawling Murarrie Queenslander at 51 Woodanga Street close to two years after they snapped up the “hidden gem”.

The four-bedroom abode will go up for auction at 10am this Saturday onsite and has already garnered hundreds of inspections and thousands of online viewings in direct testament to the sheer strength of the Brisbane market.

“Our selling agent Tammy Dale (of Place Estate Agents Bulimba) initially said to us ‘if you are interested then now is the time to sell’ and I thought ‘how crazy can the market be’?” Mrs Robertson said.

“But I went to one open home inspection and they had an ice-cream van there because there were so many people and I thought ‘mate we are putting our place on the market.’

“We ‘um’d and ah’d’ for a good month because we love this house and we worried if we could get that elsewhere, but we took the leap of faith.”

And, the leap of faith has sparked a near frenzy of buyer interest over their 1930s Queenslander which boasts four bedrooms, a home office and a backyard so breathtaking that Mr and Mrs Robertson decided to tie the knot there.

“We got married in our backyard, so we are really leaving something special behind,” she said.

Ms Dale said the upcoming Saturday and Sunday auctions were shaping up to be gargantuan with the Murarrie abode set to be a highlight event for dozens of hungry home hunters thanks to the home’s proximity to the city, stunning layout and flawless renovations.

“We are expecting a big turnout across the Place group. We are calling it a super Saturday and Sunday auction event and we have 75 auctions happening (this week and during the weekend),” Ms Dale said.

“Our auction clearance rates in Bulimba are 94 per cent at the moment and we are pretty much selling everything prior to auction or on the day compared to February last year it was about 50 per cent. And, interstate interest has increased since the start of the year as well.”

Ray White Queensland chief auctioneer Mitch Peereboom said their offices were also set to clock big sales this weekend with buyers preparing to pounce ahead of the Easter break.

“It’s quite extraordinary what’s happening in all markets right now. What we’re seeing is exceptional registration numbers that averaged 8.9 per auction last week which is incredible and we’re seeing good competition which is resulting in great sale prices,” Mr Peereboom said.

“In the last two weeks compared to a month ago every time we turn up the buyers are even more ravenous to get their hands on a property — they don’t want to muck around.”

While he said a handful of homes were set to “go off” this weekend, he listed 74 Gordon Street, Gordon Park, “a cracker” property to watch following hundreds of inspections in the lead-up to the 9am onsite Saturday event.

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom Queenslander is being marketed through Douglas May, of Ray White Sherwood–Graceville and boasts double street access and dual living, while presenting as a meticulously renovated 1920s abode on a 405-square-metre block.

Another classic Queenslander, at 34 Isedale Street, Wooloowin, has also been tipped to see a big buyer turnout, with the auction set for 11am onsite Saturday through Dwight Ferguson, of Ray White Ascot.

Finally, the striking 78 Carberry Street, Grange, will go under the hammer at 10.30am onsite this Saturday, with co-selling agent and Ray White Wilston Principal Alistair Macmillan saying inspections had clocked tripled digits in the lead-up to the auction.
