A British woman has confessed she was so drunk she bought a house without realising she had bid.
Luana Ribeira, a 40-year-old PR professional, partied hard after work and later unconsciously put in an offer on a £20,000 ($33,000) home in Leeds – and won the keys.
Ms Ribeira had “no recollection” of bidding until the real estate agent called her with congratulations, and her “annoyed” boyfriend recounted the wild night.
The founder of English firm Dauntless PR, who worked in a nightclub at the time, has a “hazy” memory of the sloshed property caper, she said.
However, her boyfriend later informed her that she got home at 8.30am, after drinks following her night shift, rang the agent to bid on the house and went to bed, she explained to the Daily Star.
Her hangover was met with the news she had purchased real estate in her inebriated state.
Ms Ribeira, from Anglesey, Wales, had fortunately seen the house earlier, before the tipsy turn of events.
A friend was keen to purchase the property and Ms Ribeira tagged along to the open for inspection.
She told the Daily Star in an interview that her friend did not want to persist with the purchase but she was a fan of the home.
“I went to see a house with a friend as it was on auction, but my friend didn’t want it as it was in a rough area,” Ms Ribeira said.
“I liked the property and thought it could be really lovely and a good investment.
“So, I went to the nightclub where I worked, stayed afterwards and got very drunk.
“I don’t actually have any recollection of doing this, but apparently I got home the next morning, called the estate agent, put a bid in and got the house.
“I woke up hungover and my boyfriend at the time was very annoyed, and was giving me the silent treatment.”
Ms Ribeira’s financial judgement, before the big night unfolded, was correct. The accidental purchase turned out to be life-changing, in the best possible way.
She sold the Leeds home after 12 months, for double what she paid, and parlayed it into another property.
She turned profits on the second, third and fourth homes she bought, and funneled the windfall into a new life and business in Portugal.
