A historic church on the market in Sandford, Tasmania, comes with a cemetery in the garden.
The former Saint Martin’s Anglican Church was first built in 1924, and offers “endless possibilities” for the future buyers, according to the listing.
“The new custodians could continue accommodating the local families by extending the cemetery and columbarium,” the listing suggests.
Other options include hiring the church out for weddings, transforming it into a unique coffee shop, founding an art studio, turning it into a residence, or continuing its current use as a karate dojo.
For those with creative vision, the church is a blank slate. Inside, the soaring vaulted ceilings, altar, and leadlight windows remain unchanged from their original state.
Outside, there is a small outbuilding currently used as a clubhouse for the local karate dojo, and an outdoor toilet block.
The graveyard is set a small distance away from the church, in the eastern corner of the block. It has been the final resting place for many local family members over the past 100 years.
In total, just over an acre of land is up for offer.
“It’s easy to see why former churches are rediscovered among home buyers wanting rare and historically rich properties,” the listing says.
“Situated in the leafy natural surrounds of Sandford, this church was once the hub of the local community and is ideally positioned in the heart of this rural residential suburb.”
