A Sydney eastern suburbs home, described as a “touch like a museum” in its advertising, sold under the hammer on Saturday for $1.4 million, despite needing a lot of work.

The two bedroom home, at 3 Walter Street, Bondi Junction, included an original 1930s kitchen and had peeling wallpaper in most rooms. It was the first time it had been sold in 75 years.

1st City Minogue and Doak Real Estate Group’s Michael Minogue said there was a lot of interest in the home, with 11 bidders registering for the “spirited and competitive” sale on Sydney’s rainy weekend.

A woman was the successful buyer, who would be looking to renovate the home and rent it out, Mr Minogue said.

“She’s bought it to potentially live in when she gets older,” he said.

The sale was one of the most distinctive at the weekend which saw Sydney’s preliminary auction clearance rate sit at 73.8 per cent after 637 scheduled auctions and 474 reported results. There were 63 properties withdrawn from auction.

Agents reported growing interest from buyers, including those looking to snap up a home before the Christmas break.

This included the auction of another historic home built in 1855 in Sydney’s inner west. It attracted a huge amount of interest from buyers, with 147 different groups inspecting it before auction day.

The two-storey, two-bedroom sandstone home at 36 Ann Street, Balmain, had eight registered bidders on Saturday, five of them active, fighting it out for the keys.

The home sold under the hammer for $2.26 million to a family buying their first home in Australia, Ray White Balmain’s Chris Williams said.

There was a mix of buyers interested in the home including empty nesters looking for something smaller to live in, Mr Williams said.

“There were lots of people out and about,” he said. “There seems to be a real urgency for people to buy something this side of Christmas.”

Eight bidders registered for the auction of a two-bedroom apartment in a much-sought after building in the eastern suburbs.

The property at 4/8 Figtree Lane, Woollahra, one of just nine in the building, sold in only five minutes as three active bidders competed.

Part of a deceased estate, the apartment sold under the hammer for $2,325,000.

“They are really tightly held,” Power and Henderson Estate Agents’ Anthony Newhouse said. “There’s only been a couple of sales in that building over the last four to five years.”

Mr Newhouse said the apartment needed a complete renovation, with the buyers, local downsizers, now planning to fix it up.

While older properties were popular at the weekend, a brand new home at 30 Anglesea Street, Bondi, also garnered a lot of interest from buyers.

The stunning five-bedroom home attracted seven registered bidders, four of them active, fighting it out for the keys.

The home, which includes a home theatre and pool, sold under the hammer for $5.2 million — one of the biggest sales at the weekend.

The buyers were a family looking to live closer to The Scots College in Bellevue Hill,  Black Diamondz Property Concierge director Monika Tu said.

Ms Tu said there were at least 45 people in the crowd, and who were socially distancing while watching the action unfold.

“It was a great result,” she said.

Farther out of the city, a five-bedroom home, with national park surrounds and a pool sold under the hammer for $2.65 million — $300,000 above the reserve.

The single storey home at 106 Haigh Avenue, Belrose, backed onto the Garigal National Park offering lots of privacy to the vendor, who was selling to downsize.

McGrath Forestville’s Karen Terry said nine bidders registered for the auction, all of them families from Sydney’s northern beaches.

“Properties like this don’t come up for sale very often,” Ms Terry said. “It was built to be very, very private.”

The ultimate buyers were originally from the UK and this was their first home in Australia.

In the ritzy lower north shore, a five-bedroom home sold for $210,000 above the reserve when 14 registered bidders competed for the property.

The home at 31 Thompson Street, Gladesville, which also included a pool and large bedrooms, sold for $2.56 million under the hammer.

“The winning bidders were a lovely couple who bought the home for their daughter; they are over the moon and can’t wait to move in,” Ray White Gladesville Principal Robert Cassidy said.

Mr Cassidy said there was still an abundance of buyers looking to snap up a home.
