Canberra Airport's Vibe Hotel lands Excellence in Building award

The multimillion-dollar hotel at Canberra Airport best known for its circular, monochrome atrium has landed the top honour at this year’s Master Builders and Cbus Excellence in Building Awards.

Construction Control’s $44 million Vibe Hotel was awarded Project of the Year at an awards ceremony on Friday.

It’s the third time the organisation has received the top gong in the past four years.

Master Builders ACT executive director Kirk Coningham said the judges had been impressed with the hotel’s architecture, design and construction.

He said the hotel, which also snagged an award for the best commercial building valued between $20 million and $50 million, reflected Canberra’s history, urban setting and natural surroundings.

“Construction Control’s expert delivery has resulted in a new destination that will attract visitors and residents with its timeless design, attention to detail and high quality finishes,” he said.

“Importantly, the Vibe Hotel was an economic driver for our city at a time when the construction sector was slowing, and created 600 jobs during the construction phase.

“The Vibe Hotel adds strength to the case for direct international flights into the ACT, and demonstrates the enduring value our industry delivers to the Canberra community.”

J & J Interiors received the Best use of Material – Commercial Interior award for the hotel’s eye-catching internal design, including its black and white, central chamber.

Other major award winners include Shape’s Kevin Hodson, who was crowned Project Manager of the Year for his work on the refurbishment of Canberra Hospital.

Woden Contractors was recognised for the company’s civil construction work on Bowen Place Crossing, the shared cycling and pedestrian underpass better linking the Lake Burley Griffin basin loop.

Bowen Place Crossing and Canberra Airport’s Vibe Hotel were also recognised at the 2016 ACT Architecture Awards, announced on the weekend.
