Red Hill is a suburb that best epitomises the bush capital. Established in 1928, its name supposedly derives from the red soil on the hill, which sits at its heart.

Dream homes are set among leafy surrounds, behind luscious and tall hedges. The suburb is home to Canberra’s highest ever residential sale at 27 Mugga Way, which sold for $7.3 million in 2010.

While the houses might be grand, the local shops are modest, with all the essentials – supermarket, pharmacy, butcher, post office and Thai restaurant.

Median house price: $1,502,500

Weekly asking rent houses: $820

Eat & Drink:

If you can’t find what you’re after at Red Hill shops, head up to Red Hill Lookout where you’ll find many more foodie options, including Onred Restaurant. Dubbed a “quintessential Canberra dining experience”, the restaurant sits at a 175-metre elevation with panoramic views across Canberra. The seasonal menu offers the best in contemporary cuisine.

Downstairs from the restaurant is Coffee N Beans, which offers a great daytime dining experience paired with delicious coffee and, of course, fantastic views. At the shops, there is Thai at Redhill where you can indulge in a flavoursome Pad Thai.

See & Do:

The suburb’s most famous location is Red Hill itself, and the best way to explore it is by taking a hike. It’s a three-kilometre return trip through scenic bushland, offering views of Woden Valley and the Inner South.

For golf enthusiasts, the Federal Golf Club is arguably the capital’s best golf course and it’s definitely the prettiest.

At dusk, many kangaroos congregate on the course. Red Hill is also home to iconic heritage-listed properties such as Calthorpe’s House, a 1920s home open to the public on weekends; The Australian Institute of Architects, ACT Chapter; and Canberra Grammar School.
