Small town Australia has certainly benefited from the pandemic as a new work-from-home option has encouraged people to pursue lifestyle balance and led to an exodus from the big cities.

Others have taken that further and are looking to establish incomes in regional and rural settings. Binalong is one of those locations and there’s an option there for someone with the right skill set or an entrepreneurial vision.

The Binalong Butchery is on almost 631 square metres in the centre of this historic village. It has been an institution for decades with a reputation for old-fashioned service in which customer purchases are paper-wrapped and secured with string.

Many have driven for hours for its roasts, snags, and meat trays while the owner also delivers to customers in Canberra.

George Southwell of Ray White Rural Canberra/Yass says the opportunity is not restricted to someone in the trade.

“It’s certainly part of the town’s fabric, but the shopfront could be repurposed as another kind of retail outlet, like a gift shop – subject to usual approvals,” he says.

“Equally, a new owner could potentially build a residence at the rear of the block and either run or lease the shopfront.”

Southwell says the property offers a very affordable lifestyle change, but it could also be the perfect opportunity for a young butcher to own their own business.
