Bonython home sets suburb record with first million-dollar sale

66 Don Dunstan Drive, Bonython surpassed the previous suburb record by $58,000.

The Tuggeranong suburb of Bonython has recorded its first million-dollar sale and broken the suburb record after a four-bedroom home sold via private negotiations on Thursday for $1.023 million, surpassing the previous benchmark by $58,000.

Listing agents Michael Martin and Melissa Von Der Burg of Luton Properties Tuggeranong were confident that the home at 66 Don Dunstan Drive would break the suburb record.

“I knew this home was a standout home, it won the Master Builders Associations Best Custom Built Home in 2010 when it was first completed and I knew there was something special about it … I haven’t seen anything quite like this home in the suburb,” Mr Martin said.

“I certainly knew it was going to be record-breaking from the get-go.”

The four-bedroom home won the Master Builders Associations Best Custom Built Home in 2010.

According to Allhomes records, Bonython’s previous record was set in 2018 by 23 Helpmann Street at $965,000.

The home with the newly crowned title sits on a block size of 541 square metres and has an open-plan kitchen area flowing seamlessly to the family areas, including covered outdoor entertaining spaces.

On the second floor, there are panoramic wall-to-wall windows offering views towards Strange Pond and the Brindabellas.

Mr Martin said the award-winning home “drew many people to the property”.

“We had over 30 private inspections in the span of two weeks so it was a very busy campaign and we managed to get over 4000 views on Allhomes within two weeks of the property listing, which is certainly double what we usually see for a home in that location.”

The vendors sold the property to downsize to a home they were building interstate, Mr Martin said, and the new buyers were an elderly couple who bought the property in a bid to be closer to family in Gordon.

Mr Martin said this latest record sale was “a really big eye-opener for the Canberra real estate market”.

“We’re seeing lots of very serious buyers at the moment. We’re not dealing with people who are just browsing or doing their research,” he said.

“It’s a time of uncertainty and a lot of people are questioning the market but to get a property that not only breaks the suburb record but to get the first million-dollar home in a suburb should give some confidence back into the market.”
