If you’re a fan of breathtaking views, being surrounded by nature and love to do your bit to reduce your carbon footprint, then 1361a Kangaroo Valley Road – or Eyrie House, as it’s affectionately known – is the place for you.
The private sanctuary sits perched on a one-hectare block – and some more – and was designed and built to complement the native bushland surrounding it.
The natural wood finishes paired with the quirky monochrome wallpapers in the bedrooms give it an instant uniqueness that’s hard to miss.
Fitted with locally sourced materials and set across two levels, the architect and owner of the home, Wesley Hindmarch, went into the design process with a clear brief in mind.
“We set out to create a three-bedroom family home that is strongly connected to its environment, has a fairly small footprint on the site, and could do more with less,” says Hindmarch.
“We were very particular in not clearing the block and establishing the house in quite a natural setting, connecting the indoor with outdoor.”
While the lower half of the home features two spacious bedrooms and a bathroom with a view to die for, it’s the second floor that really impresses.
The open-plan living is showered with natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows and boasts uninterrupted views of Kangaroo Valley, making you feel like you’re in a treetop home.
And why have run-of-the-mill blinds on those magnificent windows to block out the summer sun when you can have sliding recycled spotted gum timber screens to do the job?
The covered al fresco dining area sits comfortably off the main living area and sends the imagination straight to a lazy afternoon barbecue surrounded by friends and admiring the local landscape.
Selling agent Carrie Bond of Bond Lifestyle Properties says that the home could fit the bill for a number of different buyers.
“This is the perfect home for a small family, but it would also really suit a buyer who is looking for a weekend getaway retreat,” she says.
“If that somebody can’t use it every weekend, and they wanted passive income coming from it, it’s a perfect Airbnb.”
However, the home does lend itself to someone who would enjoy tending to the beautiful native gardens and nurturing the raised veggie patches.
Depending on your style, and love for the outdoors, it’s very easy to imagine yourself in the cliff-facing plunge pool, feet up and enjoying the serenity.
