A Deakin home that pays tribute to traditional origami making has taken the top gong at this year’s Master Builders and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards.
Architekt Grune Hauser, now known as MegaFlora, was awarded the 2020 House of the Year award for the project, dubbed Angle House. The build was commended for its functionality, longevity and aesthetics.
The mastermind behind the project was MegaFlora builder and owner Daniel Fitzpatrick who paid homage to the Japanese art of paper folding, with the use of different angles and shapes to accentuate various pockets of the house to create a visual masterpiece.
Describing the home, Mr Fitzpatrick said even with the use of technology, design and new materials, “a house can still feel handcrafted, human made and can be interacted with and given a sense of intimacy”.
Angle House also took out the Custom Built/Project Home $1 million to $2 million award, while Pichelmann Custom Building Services and DNA Architects took out the award for Custom Built/Project Home more than $2 million for a project in Campbell.
Other residential award winners included: a house in Griffith, built by Classic Constructions; a Watson home built by Sama and Co; Campbell townhouses built by McDonald & Co; and a Red Hill boutique residential development built by Homes by Howe and Studio Black Interiors.
Multi-dwelling, renovation and extension projects were also recognised. There were 50 award winners altogether this year.
With the pandemic in our midst, Master Builders ACT conducted the awards differently from previous years, announcing two award winners online every day since October 19.
The House of the Year award was the final award announced today.
Master Builders ACT said the calibre of entries in this year’s awards was extremely high.
“This year’s Master Builders and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards entries are outstanding examples of projects created by high-quality local builders across the nation’s capital,” said Master Builders ACT CEO Michael Hopkins.
