Forrest is an excellent spot in which to savour a slice of Canberra’s history. Originally part of a suburb called Blandfordia and gazetted in 1928, it’s one of the few suburbs to be built to Walter Burley Griffin’s original Canberra plans and features more than its fair share of heritage homes.

The streets of Forrest are circular and geometric, with large blocks and picturesque, tree-lined streets.

Sitting just to the south of Parliament House, it regularly tops the list as Canberra’s most expensive suburb.

Eat & drink

You’ll need to venture beyond the bounds of Forrest for a good feed, but luckily, not far. A scenic stroll through the leafy streets will lead you to Manuka shops, where you’ll find cafes, restaurants and bars.

Caphs Cafe, Bar and Restaurant has been serving locals since 1926 and has a reputation for excellent coffee and food.

Head to Public Bar for modern pub fare and a cocktail, or to Trecento for authentic woodfired pizzas and Italian sweets.

For brunch with a side of people watching, head to Manuka Lawns, where you can indulge at Pattisez Cafe, home of the famous Freak Shakes.

Neighbouring Urban Pantry and Typica both offer delicious food in a beautiful setting.

If you’re in the mood for fine dining, some of Canberra’s top restaurants are only slightly further afield. Lilotang, Chairman and Yip, Otis Dining Hall, Vincent and Rubicon are all a short distance away.

See & do

Get your heart pumping with a walk up Red Hill, have a hit at the Forrest Tennis Club or ditch your shoes for a game of barefoot bowls at the Canberra Bowling Club, the oldest bowlo in town.

The 1930s art deco-style Manuka Pool is nearby and features a lap pool and lawns that are perfect for lounging on sunny days.

If you’re more of a spectator, Manuka Oval is only a short walk away and hosts many a match when the AFL or cricket comes to town.

Manuka is also the perfect place for a spot of shopping, with plenty of jewellers, fashion and homewares.
