Less than 15 minutes drive from Canberra city you’ll find Lyons.

It sits in Canberra’s south in the Woden district, and the suburb offers many nods to a much more southern part of the country: Tasmania.

Lyons is named after Joseph Lyons, the former premier of Tasmania, and later, prime minister of Australia during the 1930s.

The streets are also named after locations in Tasmania.

At the heart of Lyons are the Lyons shops, which include the always buzzing Stand By Me cafe. There’s always great coffee and warm service on offer, but it’s worth a trip there just for their ever-changing weekly french toast special.

Live here and you’re lucky to count Lyon’s Friendly Grocer as your local store. It’s jam-packed with all the essentials plus an extensive range of local produce, like chocolates, honey, bread, and pastries.

On the western edge of the suburb is Oakey Hill Nature Reserve, which is a picturesque spot for a walk to enjoy the views or just lap up the fresh air. And just across Melrose Drive, strap on your skates for a spin around the rink at the Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Centre.
