16 Landsborough Street in Griffith is going to auction at 10am, September 26.

Many of us have spent more time at home over the last six months than at any other time and the “staycation” may well be our new normal for some time to come.

Mario Sanfrancesco of Blackshaw Manuka says resort-style homes have been increasingly sought-after in the past several years.

“I think the pandemic has given interest in that style of home an even further boost,” he says.

“People are realising that if they’re going to be spending more time at home, they should make it fit their lifestyles.”

Sanfrancesco says outdoor entertaining areas have been evolving in importance and are now as much a focal point as a home interior.

“Frequently, it is now under the main roofline with sophisticated outdoor kitchens, fire pits, pools, spas, heating – the options are comprehensive,” he says.

Stephen Bunday of LJ Hooker Dickson says the trend has been toward maximising the use of an outdoor area as an extension of indoor living.

“Land is expensive and people want to make as much use of it as possible – that’s a driver behind the rise of comfortable outdoor living,” he says.

“Another motivator is to ensure an outdoor space can be used for more of the year, rather than just the warmer months.”

Bunday says this has led to the rise of the all-weather space – one that can be closed off.

“The distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces, fittings and furnishing is definitely blurring,” he says.

  • Blurred lines. Many new homes or rebuilds are ensuring that outdoor living spaces are integral elements of the overall design. The distinction between the two spaces is beginning to blur.
  • Year-round. Outdoor entertaining can be a year-round option if spaces are designed to provide shelter from the weather or to close it out. There are add-on options for overhead cover and side enclosures.
  • Fit it out. Think about your space and how you want to zone it: kitchen, living, dining? Outdoor kitchens are getting more specky, even adding dishwashers. Other favourites: infrared heaters and fire pits.
