Inside a restored former Anglican church two hours from Canberra

The church's history and modern restorations have made the property popular.

Have you ever dreamt of living in a perfectly restored church, filled with the contrast of local history and beautifully designed modern interiors?

Built in 1905 and owned by the Anglican Church until 2021, when it was bought by the current owners, the one-bedroom property at 45 Baylis Street, Bethungra, could be the answer you are looking for.

The former church’s combination of history and modern restorations have made the property popular with a range of buyers, said selling agent Brett Hayman of Hayman Partners.

“The sellers, who beautifully renovated the home, always had a dream to restore a church,” he said. “In this case, they used [it] as an Airbnb and country weekender.

“So far, there has been good interest from people all over the east coast, as well as locals and interstate buyers as far as Perth.

“Most of the buyers are looking at the property to live in as their primary residence, and a few are looking at it as a country escape or Airbnb investment opportunity.”

The character of the church remains, with nine original stained-glass windows, 7.5-metre cathedral ceilings and some of the original hardwood floors.

The owners have added a modern kitchen and a new bathroom, redone the plumbing, stormwater drains and electrics, and installed an electric car charger to bring the property into the modern day.

Hayman said buyers interested in architecture would adore this property and its relative affordability in comparison with other historical properties with similar drawcards.

“Usually, architectural buildings like this are big and expansive, but this one is on the more affordable side, with an immense amount of space to be able to enjoy [the tranquillity],” he said.

“The property is unique and truly beautiful. It’s just two hours from Canberra and located right between Cootamundra and Junee, and is perfect for a country escape.

“The fact the property is stone means there is less maintenance, and the over 2000-square-metre block provides a lot of space for buyers, as well as an escape from city life.”

With so many city buyers looking for a tree change, the location of this property and its uniqueness only further add to its appeal, Hayman said.

“The area is filled with history and entertainment, including the Junee Licorice & Chocolate Factory, Bradman’s Captains Walk and the Bethungra Rail Spiral and dam,” he said.
