There are certain areas of Canberra where, if you live there, you know you have it made. The Inner North is one of those. Living there is an indication of success – however you define it – and one that many of us aspire to.
Throughout my time writing New Homes, I’ve been very transparent about my desire to live in Canberra’s Inner North or Inner South one day.
There are the stunning streetscapes, the mix of heritage and contemporary design, and the towering 100-year-old deciduous trees that line the streets, putting on a spectacular display of colour in autumn.
It’s where I could toss away my car keys and use convenient bike paths and public transport to get where I need to go. In my opinion, it’s the ultimate Canberra lifestyle.
A development that recognises the calibre of the Inner North is O’Connor’s newest boutique development, MADE – a collection of just five townhouses, developed by AFPC and designed by Terry Ring and Associates that embraces the Inner North lifestyle.
“For the Inner North and the ability to create so much density around the Northbourne Avenue corridor, it’s rare to get a dwelling that looks into green space the way MADE does,” says agent Matt Shipard of HIVE Property.
“Connection is what the Inner North is all about and these dwellings look straight onto the bike path that comes from Lyneham – the one that all residents use to get into the city to ride to work, to uni or even down to the lake.
“The floor plans are made up of three or four bedroom options, with multiple living areas in each home.
“There is flexibility in the floor plans and flexibility in living, with options like dual master bedrooms – one on the ground floor and a second upstairs,” Shipard adds.
“The indoor to outdoor relationships are strong across each dwelling. The primary living areas are accessible to the outside via things like stackable or big glass sliding doors.
“Natural light is also a really strong element across each of them. Though they are technically east-west facing, they all have north and northeast orientations. It also flows in from the beautifully designed skylights on the second floor.”
The facade balances urban architecture with the natural landscape, blending hard materials with endless glass to reflect the surrounding greenery.
Inside, large designer kitchens make cooking for the family a breeze, while functional storage options allow enough space for most prized possessions.
“What I like most about this development is that the developer has a design palette refined from all of their previous developments across the Inner North and Inner South,” Shipard says.
“They take on the feedback they’ve received through those jobs and mould the next product according to that feedback. It’s a very specific, educated, real-life approach, as opposed to generalising or thinking hypothetically about what the market might want.”
Shipard expects MADE will appeal most to downsizers and younger families.
“MADE is for anyone who wants that Inner North lifestyle,” he says. “Younger families moving from greater Belconnen or Gungahlin for the school catchment areas and the lifestyle change.
“The homes themselves are definitely big enough for the family, with efficient floor plans and plenty of living space.
“Downsizers will love the close proximity to main arterial public transport and bike paths, as well as the quality of the build and the predominant living on the ground floor.”
Expected completion is mid-2023.
