A home in Macquarie has broken the suburb record after selling for $2.86 million at auction on Wednesday, beating the previous record at 3 Blackman Crescent by $460,000.

The six-bedroom house on 45 Castlereagh Crescent garnered around 50 inquiries throughout the campaign, with 38 groups viewing the property, said selling agent Michael Wang of Independent Gungahlin.

“The feedback we got for the home was around the $2.7 million mark … my expected range was about $2.8 million, so I am happily surprised that it achieved more than that,” he said.

In the lead-up to the auction, they were expecting three registered bidders, Wang said, but ended up getting five with four of them actively participating.

The sale started with an offer of $2.4 million “which was a surprise”, and was followed by a competitive battle between all active bidders, he added.

“The majority of the potential buyers were family groups who were local to Belconnen and the Inner North area, wanting to upgrade to bigger properties,” he said.

“The buyer who got the home in the end actually works in the Jamison Centre, so she and her family have the convenience of that.

“The reason they wanted to move to Macquarie was proximity to shops … they were living in Belconnen anyway but wanted to be closer to their kids’ schools too.”

The home itself is architect-designed, surrounded by mature gardens and created with both indoor and outdoor entertaining in mind.

Features of the home include a theatre room, heated swimming pool, four-car garage and Japanese tatami room.

Wang said the main drawcard of the property was its grandeur.

“It is significantly on the large side of houses available in the area – 677 square metres of living on a 1400-square-metre total block,” he said.

“The vendor who built the home is actually a licensed builder for Prof Homes, who bought the block initially as it is next to a reserve and a playground.

“It only has one neighbour too, so he did a complete knockdown-rebuild to create a much bigger home that would accommodate his family.”
