A spoonful of concept stylists makes the medicine go down, and when I say medicine, I mean elegant home design.

Meet Jane Goodall and Isabel Smith, the Mary Poppins of home styling and space conceptualising. Instead of melodic tunes they wield a sharp set of eyes, a passion for renovation and design and a creative flair that turned a side hustle into their main squeeze.

“After several years working in the public service, and completing a few building and renovation projects individually, we both made a decision to pursue a creative pathway,” Goodall says.

“Bijoux Home grew out of a shared desire to create homes in Canberra that weren’t available to buy ‘off the shelf’ at the time, centred around good design and quality craftsmanship.”

Their work includes, but is not limited to, interior and editorial styling, custom furniture design, project management, alterations, lighting plans and I can still see a raft of other things rattling around their magic bag of never-ending talents.

In essence, “We help people reimagine spaces in their home that reflect their style and how they like to live,” Smith says.

One day this will mean working with a singular piece of furniture or a stunning piece of art and conceiving a distinctive style around it. Other days it means starting from scratch and pulling a complete space together with custom-designed joinery, new furniture, objects and art.

But no matter the brief, the women behind Bijoux Home are passionate about encapsulating the personality of a residence, a person, or even a feeling.

“Some people want to create a calm sanctuary with a muted colour palette and others want to feel inspired with splashes of bright colour. We choose colours, shapes and materials that evoke the mood that our clients want,” Goodall says.

“It’s a bit like choosing a birthday present for someone you’ve known forever, if you know their taste, you know they’ll love it!” Smith says.

Like any artist, they take inspiration from the landscape around them. And seeing as indoors is their hunting ground, sculptures, paintings, architecture or a piece of tactile woven material is their source of nourishment.

You’ll find an eclectic array of distinctive items listed on their online shop and even a couple pieces from Homegrown alum Penelope Boyd on the walls of Bijoux homes.

But it’s one thing to be inspired and another to act upon it. Goodall and Smith possess an inherent innovate drive that’s led them to shake up the industry and challenge the expected. With that, they created Canberra’s first “shoppable home”.

“The idea was to curate and style different homes around Canberra as shoppable homes, to showcase some of our local architects, designers and builders alongside some of our favourite furniture and art,” Smith says.

Instead of buying the house, you peruse and purchase the items within it. This burgeoning idea offers the opportunity to envisage how a certain piece will look or perform in a space, as well as providing all-too needed help for the creatively challenged.

The early adopters have also invented a clever way to finesse the current social restrictions. Goodall and Smith have just launched an online introductory styling package that’s offered alongside a free 15-minute video consultation.

They won’t appear in the sky, clutching an umbrella, but you will find them at bijouxhome.com.au
