BumNuts Australia is a family business hatched eight years ago.

This is one of those opportunities when putting all your eggs in one basket may well be the decision of a lifetime.

BumNuts Australia is a family business hatched eight years ago with just 50 chickens. It now has more than 12,000 layers and has become a leader in pastured, free-range egg farming.

The business is being sold on a “walk-in, walk-out” basis with supply contracts in place (including to major supermarkets) in NSW and the ACT, along with all plant, packaging equipment, fixtures and fittings. It even includes working dogs and a couple of vehicles. In short: everything a buyer would need to continue a successful business.

Richard Fleming of Flemings Boorowa & Harden says potential buyers may also be drawn to the business philosophy with its commitment to the environment and innovation.

“The owners have taken a holistic approach to sustainable farming, regenerative agriculture, and animal welfare,” he says.

“They’ve combined that with a focus on organic and biodynamic principles.”

One of their innovations has been the design and construction of mobile chook sheds that have enabled the business to reap the benefits of chicken bio-waste.

Mesh floors enable chickens to fertilise paddocks as the units are moved throughout the pastures. Chicken waste increases soil productivity and results in happier, healthier layers.

These innovations have seen BumNuts recognised in the NSW/ACT community and regional achievement awards for Prime Super Agriculture Innovation.

Fleming says the opportunity to acquire the business will likely appeal to an experienced primary producer.

“But, equally, it could be taken on by someone looking for a change of lifestyle in a business that has plenty of upside,” he says.

“It’s certainly scalable, and there are many more markets beyond the borders of NSW and the ACT.”

A new owner would need to locate the business on their own land or a leased pasture of a minimum of 20 hectares.
