A home in Red Hill tucked in amid the surrounding natural landscape has won the House of the Year at this year’s Master Builders and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards, held on Friday.
The house, affectionately known as The Nest, was designed and built by Preferred Builders and DNA Architects. This is the second time the two firms working in partnership have won the award, after taking out the same award in 2017 for the same client.
The residence has a neutral colour palette and looking at its facade, one would think it sits on a single level.
On entry, the soaring ceilings as high as 4.5 metres impress. The double-story property’s floor plan has a seamless flow and the floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the natural light.
The Nest also features concealed internal doors, a theatre room, two studies, multiple bedrooms all with en suites, and a swim spa.
The location affords stunning views out the back, spanning the Inner South all the way to Queanbeyan.
The home was particularly commended for the basement car museum.
“The basement car museum is a tribute to people who have displayed excellence in their trade, which perfectly matches the expert craftsmanship by both members on this project,” Master Builders chief executive Michael Hopkins said.
“The seamless flow from room to room of the home is a credit to the collaboration between Preferred Builders, DNA Architects and their client.
“The fact that these MBA members have delivered two award-winning homes for the same client in 2017 and 2022 shows the fantastic relationship both companies work to foster with their clients.”
The house took out two more awards on the night, being in the Custom Built/Project Home more than $4 million and Best Use of Material in a Residential Project categories.
There were 57 awards given out to Canberra homes throughout the remainder of the event.
It was the first time in three years the Master Builders and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards were held in person due to the pandemic.
