Australians have a real love affair with light-filled homes and Canberrans are on a unity ticket with the rest of the country.

Brenden Blewitt of Blewitt Properties, who lists this week’s Jerrabomberra feature property, says the reason is really quite simple.

“Light-filled homes are really welcoming and all that light simply makes you feel good,” he said.

“That’s probably even more important at this time of the year when we could all use a good dose of warm sunshine.”

Blewitt says most homes these days are designed with an open plan which ensures light fills the bigger family spaces, but there are other ways to bring in the sunshine.

“Big windows, free from outside shading, can really draw it in,” he said, and “walls are best painted white or neutral to further reflect and amplify light”.

Other ideas include skylights to brighten difficult spots and mirrors to further reflect light and create an illusion of space.

Lisa Harper of The Property Collective said a light-filled home puts prospective buyers in a positive mood.

“There’s a definite difference in their responses to one that is flooded with light against one where not as much flows in,” she said.

“The presence of abundant light can make a real difference to how quickly a home might sell.”

Harper said a northern orientation is highly desirable for maximising light, and interior features like high ceilings can amplify the effect.

“Light is important in outdoor living areas, too – motorised pergolas can really help deliver that.”

  • Good vibes: Most people would choose a home filled with natural light over a dark, gloomy space. Light can lift moods and provide an energy pick-up.
  • Open plan: Most modern homes feature an open-plan central living hub where the family room, dining area and kitchen are located. Big spaces framed by floor-to-ceiling windows and high ceilings really draw in the light.
  • Bright ideas: Ensure trees don’t block windows. Paint surfaces white or neutral. Mirrors help reflect natural light, while glass inserts in doors let it through. Skylights can help light difficult areas.

One of the secrets to a light-filled home interior is to keep the palette to a minimum.

And this Jerrabomberra home, set over three levels, has followed the narrative throughout, using whites and greys with timber highlights.

Plenty of windows help draw in that natural light, and there’s an abundance of it in this fully renovated, five-bedroom family home.

It has a ringside location backing onto a peaceful nature reserve with endless views that further add to the appeal.

Inside, the large, open-plan family, dining and kitchen zone is also flooded with light and leads to a spacious formal lounge with raked ceilings.

Triple-glazed windows throughout provide exceptional insulation and frame those amazing views.

There’s no shortage of space for the home chef, who will give a big tick to the new kitchen and butler’s pantry, marble benches and splashback.

The appliances include a quality double oven, cooktop and dishwasher.

Upstairs, the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and a large en suite. Two further bedrooms also have en suites, a fourth has access to the rear yard, and the fifth leads onto a terrace.

All of the bathrooms are finished in stunning marble, while comfort is delivered through ducted reverse-cycle air-conditioning.

Al-fresco entertaining will be a breeze with an outdoor kitchen, surrounded by low-maintenance gardens.

The home has a double garage and a new driveway offers ample off-street parking.
