A day in Chifley: The foodie hotspots putting this Woden Valley suburb on the map

January 30, 2020
Enjoy brunch with friends at A Bite to Eat in Chifley.

Located on the skirts of Canberra’s south, Chifley is one of Canberra’s hidden suburban gems.

Established in 1966, the suburb was named after Joseph Benedict Chifley, Australia’s former prime minister from 1945 to 1949. The streets of Chifley are also named after notable scientists and educationalists.

Sitting just behind Mount Taylor and within close proximity to the Woden Town Centre, Westfield with its new Bradley Street dining Precinct, and only a 15-minute drive to the city, it’s an ideal place to explore, play and live.

Eat & drink

A Bite to Eat has been a much-loved local cafe since it swung its doors open in 2004. The three-time Delicious magazine winner is found in the heart of the suburb and eclectically styled in old meets new. The sunny courtyard is perfect for relaxing with friends over brunch or a cocktail … or three.

If you’re looking for an on-the-go pick-me-up, it doesn’t get much better than Chifley Grocer, the neighbourhood’s local fine food and wine supermarket. With an in-house bakery and cafe, you can do your grocery shop as you sip on the coffee that has the neighbourhood raving. As well as all your everyday items, you can find specialty and locally sourced products.

See & do

Across the road from A Bite to Eat is Chifley Playspace, which is an absolute hit with the kids. There’s plenty of swing sets, climbing frames and a basketball court to keep the little ones entertained, while residents can also take advantage of the barbecue facilities available onsite.

The playspace also backs out onto Chifley Neighbourhood Oval, the perfect place for a game of afternoon touch football or a spot to bring out the picnic blankets, baskets and snacks to watch the sunset.
