Campbell has been experiencing renewal as older homes are replaced by contemporary versions.

This Anzac Park home in Campbell was enjoyed by Canberra historian and geographer Alan Foskett for some 60 years.

The celebrated former public servant and author of more than 40 publications on Canberra life passed away in January at the age of 93.

This four-bedroom residence he shared with his wife and four children sits on 864 square metres of land and embodies all the grace, style and character of a mid-century Canberra home, with a garden sanctuary to match.

The house of 164 square metres features two separate living areas – a formal lounge, adjacent to a dining room, in the main house, and a home office or rumpus room to the rear, next to the main bedroom and en suite.

The other three bedrooms are serviced by a main bathroom.

One of Foskett’s four adult children, Jane Weber, says the home and location are packed with memories.

“Anzac Park is a special place,” she says. “The street and Campbell gave us a close-knit and safe community to grow up in.

“We used to play cricket with the neighbourhood kids and every year we would have a front-row spot for the Anzac Day parade.”

Weber says the family’s long association with Campbell has seen it evolve as newer homes replace originals and newer families move in.

“It’s changed in some ways, but stayed the same in many others,” she says. “Campbell is still a great place to bring up a family.”

What makes Campbell so special?

Campbell occupies a unique place in the local landscape. Geographically, it’s part of the Inner North, but is only just separated from its cross-lake counterpart by a narrow strip of water.

That gives Campbell a certain kind of neutrality in the tribal rivalry between those north and south of the lake. If it was in Europe, Campbell would be Switzerland.

The suburb is also one of the ACT’s longest established areas and home to the Australian War Memorial and the impressively wide boulevard that is Anzac Parade. It’s home to a diverse range of dwellings: original character homes, contemporary rebuilds and the master-planned C5 mixed-use development.

Samantha Granter of Belle Property Canberra says Campbell’s charm is enhanced by its established trees and its extensive parklands.

“It’s certainly perceived as a prestigious suburb, with home sales that certainly prove that point,” she says. “The diversity in the housing stock draws a wide range of demographics, from young families to downsizers.”

Granter says Campbell has been experiencing renewal as older homes are replaced by contemporary versions.

“It’s a credit to the architects that these new designs integrate into the existing built landscape and help renew Campbell while retaining its character,” she says.

“And there are plenty of original character homes enjoying a new lease of life through sympathetic renovations and extensions.”

Granter says the successful C5 development has given more people an opportunity to enjoy the Campbell lifestyle, boosted by its retail and hospitality options.

  • Location: Campbell sits to the south-east of the Canberra CBD at the base of Mount Ainslie, further bounded by the Mount Pleasant Nature Reserve. It enjoys close proximity to Lake Burley Griffin.
  • Landmarks: The suburb is rich with icons in a landscape dominated by Anzac Parade, itself crowned by the Australian War Memorial. It is also home to the Royal Military College, Duntroon.
  • Character: Campbell’s established leafiness and extensive parklands prove the perfect setting for a dwelling mix that includes character homes, contemporary new builds and apartments, many within the successful C5 development.
