Home-buying hopefuls may now be able to avoid paying stamp duty after the ACT government announced a new initiative for owner-occupiers purchasing off-the-plan properties, injecting some much-needed confidence back into the market amid Canberra’s property boom.

The territory government announced in June that any owner-occupier buying an off-the-plan unit or townhouse for under $500,000 would not need to pay stamp duty, as part of a plan to phase out the property tax completely.

Stamp duty will also be reduced by $1040 for any owner-occupier property purchase between $200,000 and $1.455 million in 2021-22.

The property tax has already been abolished for first-home buyers on any residential property as long as their annual household income is less than $160,000.
