It’s been 18 months since The Property Collective entered Canberra’s real estate market looking to do things differently, and a newly unveiled project shows them doing just that.
After almost a year in the making, the team has launched its own environmental initiative, in which a tree is planted for every property sold and rented through the business.
Spearheaded by directors Hannah Gill and Will Honey, environmental awareness is at the core of what The Property Collective stands for in its day-to-day business.
“We got together as a team a while ago and talked about what was really important to us when it came to giving back to the community,” Gill said.
“There was a clear consensus from the team that we were passionate about the environment and, off the back of that, we did a deep dive into how we could contribute in a tangible way.”
The Property Collective has now teamed up with international not-for-profit organisation One Tree Planted, which will help to facilitate planting the trees across Australia each month.
While the organisation plants trees in multiple areas across the globe, The Property Collective team has requested that their donations will contribute to trees being planted as close to home as possible.
In addition, when launching the initiative last month, The Property Collective donated a lump sum to plant a tree for each property sold and rented since the company’s inception – 1036 trees.
Gill said it seemed like a no-brainer to commit to an initiative with this focus.
“We wanted the team’s buy-in when rolling out a community-focused initiative, and it was a loud and clear message that it should be something environmentally centred,” she said.
“We know the positive impact of planting trees and we thought, not only can you see it, but it is also something we can physically do as a team at times across the year.”
After the recent string of floods on Australia’s east coast, and the Black Summer bushfires, Gill said the collaboration with One Tree Planted was not only necessary but here for the long haul.
“We know the impacts of global warming and we have seen some of those impacts close to home,” she said. “We know how planting trees can help to make a difference, so we see this as a forever campaign.
“It sounds cliche but there is no planet B. We have kids, and they will have kids and we want to do our part to make a difference.
“It might be a little thing, but little things become big things if you keep doing them.”
Officially launched with the entire team at Pialligo Estate in May, The Property Collective will now kick off its donations on a monthly basis.
The team set out to break the boundaries since opening its doors in December 2020, and it will be worth keeping an eye on how it keeps doing that in the future.
