Someone once said your past shouldn’t define you, but in the small village of Gundaroo – only 40 minutes from Canberra’s CBD – the area’s history comes alive.

From humble beginnings, Gundaroo’s first non-residential building was built in 1834. Within a few years, the first post office was opened, followed by a school and a police station all the makings of a charming close-knit community.

But the town’s prosperity grew when gold was discovered in 1852 and, by 1859, Gundaroo had a population of more than 500.

Today, visitors are attracted to the town’s old-world charm and character with most of the buildings constructed in the 19th century remaining unchanged.

Its wide, quiet streets and tranquil surrounds provide a great escape from the capital’s hustle and bustle, and it’s also the perfect answer for those looking for a tree change.
