What makes Canberra regions so unique?

10 Scarborough Street, Red Hill is on the market via private negotiations.

Canberrans might consider themselves one homogenous mob, but every one of its regions has its own character – from Tuggeranong to Gungahlin and all those in between.

Bree Prince of HIVE Property says the identity of each region is defined by its people and the reasons they call it home.

“The Inner South, for example, attracts people for its established leafy appeal and a sense of history,” she says.

“And they are also drawn to its proximity to well-regarded schools, hospitality and retail options and to workplaces.”

Prince says people may be drawn to, say, our newest region, the Molonglo Valley, for very different reasons.

“It’s an area that offers newer homes and is conveniently located, but it is also a gateway to great open-space recreational options like the Mount Stromlo MTB Park,” she says.

Jason Roses of VERV Property says the motivation to move to a specific region can really be captured in one word: lifestyle.

“It really depends on what a buyer needs from a place at each stage of their lifecycle,” he says.

“A first-home buyer may be drawn to an Inner North development on the Braddon cafe strip while a family might be focused on an established home on a big block in Belconnen.”

Roses says the choice of a particular region is the outcome of a deliberation that assesses diverse factors from future-proofing an investment to a sense of the “vibe” in a particular place.

  • Character: Canberra is the sum of its parts, and those parts are diverse – from the leafy charms of the Inner South and North to the outdoor adventure persona of the Molonglo Valley.
  • Appeal: There’s a practical dimension as to why people might call a specific region home. It could include a convenient location, the presence of schools, a walkable neighbourhood – or perhaps a vibey nightlife.
  • Tick: There are many inputs into the equation as to why someone chooses to call a region home – but at the end of the day the answer that pops out is inevitable: lifestyle.
