In recent years, buyers have been departing Sydney in droves, headed for regional areas for a sea change.
Yet the alluring seaside locale of Clovelly affords this same lifestyle without leaving the city.
Residents of Clovelly, which is located just eight kilometres from Sydney’s CBD, enjoy a slice of both the city and coastal cake.
The area has excellent clifftop parklands that border Clovelly beach, flowing to a popular ocean pool footsteps from the historic Clovelly Surf Life Saving Club.
So it’s no wonder the suburb has a year-round sunny disposition.
There are many reasons why those 4752-odd residents who are lucky enough to call Clovelly home rarely feel the need to leave, with affluent home owners typically living in an architect-designed beachfront residence with ocean views.
“Many families in Clovelly have upgraded from their first apartment to a semi, then a free-standing home as their family grows, as owners are reluctant to move out of this suburb – and who can blame them,” says PPD Real Estate partner Alexander Phillips.
“On the flip side, downsizers also tend to sell their large family homes, intent to remain in this much-beloved area.”
As more people clue in on the option to make a sea change in the city, Clovelly’s price growth has continued, rising 27.1 per cent year-on-year to a median of $4.575 million, according to the latest Domain House Price Report.
“Contributing to this are many buyers from the inner city who are seeking a family-friendly community with easy access to renowned private schools such as St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School,” Phillips says.
“But, mostly, they come to pursue the relaxed coastal lifestyle that Clovelly offers.”
Local businesses are flourishing in this burgeoning enclave, including florist and ceramics shop Chinaclay.
“Since opening our store in 2016, we have noticed significant growth in the area, in no small part due to a very loyal local community,” says owner Celia Crawford.
“Burnie Street alone, where we are located, has a wonderful seafood restaurant called Reel, a very successful hair salon – The Salon by Ash Croker – and yoga studio This Is Yoga.
“An ideal day at Clovelly is essentially a culinary tour for me, including starting with a coffee and an almond croissant from Madame & Yves, and ending with a late lunch and a few beverages at Clovelly Hotel,” she says.
Engaging the visual sense and connecting with its seaside surroundings, this bespoke beach house was crafted by award-winning architect Tom Rivard, with many outlooks through full-height windows, skylights and a retractable glass ceiling.
