Construction begins on new Tuggeranong retirement village

Construction has begun on a new retirement village in Kambah, which will have 140 units upon completion.

The first sod was turned on Tuesday at a ceremony attended by ACT Planning Minister Mick Gentleman and Hindmarsh chief executive Rowan Hindmarsh.

Mr Hindmarsh said the company has already received a “tremendous response” to the project and the first 18 villas in the initial release of 30 have sold.

“There’s no shortage of people seeking high-quality retirement living options for their future and this community will go some way to meeting the robust demand,” Mr Hindmarsh said.

Mr Gentleman said Marigal Gardens was an important development that would “significantly contribute to rejuvenating the Tuggeranong region”.

“By providing a range of housing options, ageing residents can choose to retire locally and maintain important social connections,” Mr Gentleman said.

“Retirement villages make up an important piece of this puzzle, meeting significant demand for senior living options in Canberra’s south.

“In addition to broadening housing options, this development will provide a wide range of social, cultural and economic opportunities for the Tuggeranong area.”

Hindmarsh bought the 3.6 hectare site from the ACT government last year for $6.05 million.

Upon completion, the community will comprise a mix of independent living apartments and semi-detached villas in two- and three-bedroom designs. Prices range from $425,000 to $600,000.

Hindmarsh national retirement manager Erik Boddeus said the complex will offer its residents a range of on-site facilities.

“Residents can access a community centre with lounge rooms, function room, meeting room, library, barbecue area, bar, theatrette, hairdressing salon, security cameras and patrols, pharmacy delivery service and a community bus,” Mr Boddeus said.

Completion on the first homes and the community centre is expected in the first half of 2017.
