One of the most coveted blocks in Canberra goes under the hammer on March 25

A 60-year-old, three-bedroom home sits on this prized 867-square-metre Yarralumla site, separated from Lake Burley Griffin by just a narrow strip of foreshore reserve.

The homeowner’s son, Garry Newcombe, says developers have been knocking on the front door for years.

“Mum has been continually asked if she was interested in selling,” he says.

Garry says his parents bought the home new in 1957 and he and his brother grew up in it.

“When we first moved in, there was only paddocks in front – until the lake appeared,” he says.

“My brother and I had a great time – it was like our own pool and we were in it all the time.”

Garry says the home holds great memories for the family, but his mum is philosophical about its future.

“A lot has changed around the area and we understand that a new home is likely to be going up,” he says.

The cottage sits on a rectangular block that’s free of any imposing easements.
