Tiny house? Old news. Tiny retro caravan? Done. Train carriage conversion? All over it. How about a spooky cabin hanging from a bridge?

Czech architects H3T architekti have come up with the “Black Flying House”, a black, wooden, pointy-roofed cabin suspended from under a bridge in the middle of a forest.

At 1.7 metres by 2.5 metres, it comes with a living room with a stove for heating, and a sleeping loft above – with a skylight and a single window for light. There’s also a ladder so passers-by can climb up and visit, but it’s normally stowed away out of sight.

While it looks like it could be tucked deep in the woods far from anywhere, it’s actually set up as an art installation near the Czech city of Pardubice – only 15 minutes walk from the city centre.

H3T architekti was started in 2009 by Vit Simek and Stephen Gregory, and has now expanded to seven architects. They specialise in small buildings and temporary structures placed in unusual spots – such as a tiny, black, gabled, wooden cabin underneath an old railway bridge.

Some of their other unexpected, thought-provoking installations include a sauna hidden among wood stored for the winter on a farm, and another temporary sauna outside the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery.

While the “Black Flying House” looks to be a bit less cosy, that’s presumably all part of the experience. Where better to get away from it all and contemplate the snow?
