Who doesn’t love a house with a name? In the NSW Northern Rivers town of Grafton, not only can you nab one with historic pedigree, you can get Ravenford as it’s known for $410,000.

The adorable home was originally built around 1880 and owned by a river boat captain, George Greenaway. Now four bedrooms, it was extended upwards by its second owner, a member of the Henson family who owned the cordial factory next door.

It’s one of several historically significant properties found on Villiers Street and, aside from standing out for being one of the increasingly rare two-storey weatherboard homes in town, it’s also set apart by its leadlight windows and mature garden.

The home’s Heritage Item description notes that it looks to have been converted into flats at one point, but it has since been returned to a single residence.

Agent Adam Crawley from McKimm’s Real Estate said the home could suit someone who was after “a classy old house”, or would also work well as a home business site.

“It does need some work,” he said, adding that while it was generally in good condition, the rustic nature of the kitchen in particular might lend itself to being enlarged and improved.

In need of a kitchen renovation or not, the home was a unique piece of the area’s history, he said.

“A lot of people don’t realise driving past it day to day,” Mr Crawley added. “There aren’t many really two-storey places of that age in Grafton.”

The home had been listed at one point in 2017, and was described as being no longer needed by the owners.

With a median house price of $330,000, the suburb of Grafton posted 5.8 per cent growth in its median house price, year on year, with 26.9 per cent growth over five years. More broadly, the Coffs Harbour – Grafton region experience 5.49 per cent growth over the past year.

The most expensive sale in the suburb so far this year was 82 Victoria Street, a commercial property which changed hands for $780,000 in March, while 30 Mark Close sold for $650,000, also in March.
