Cooyong Street is looking dramatically different as the demolition of the Allawah Flats nears completion.

The demolition process, which includes clearing the site and preparing it for excavation, is on track for completion in August.

The demolition works started in May and machinery began razing the site in June.

The redevelopment of the “ABC Flats”, comprising the Allawah and Currong buildings and the neighbouring Bega Flats, is part of the ACT government’s public housing renewal program.

The 25,630-square-metre Allawah and Currong site, known as Section 52 Braddon, sold at auction in February 2016 for $47 million.

The Currong Flats development, which occupied the rear of the block, was demolished in July.

Bega Flats is the last complex of the trio still standing.

The 11,712-square-metre site, which is being marketed as “City 7”, will be auctioned in August.

City 7 could house about 350 dwellings, while a mixed-use development with 329 apartments and 2625 square metres of commercial space is slated for the Section 52 site.

Section 52 is being developed in two stages. Excavation on stage one is expected to start in early August.
