As sports fans around the world look towards Melbourne where the Australian Open is underway, keen tennis players could have their own court closer to home.

Around the country, there are dozens of homes for sale that boast a private tennis court in the backyard.

“Affluent suburbs with larger blocks typically feature the most tennis courts,” says Nerida Conisbee, chief economist for the Ray White Group.

Suburbs like Wahroonga in Sydney and Mount Eliza in Melbourne have seen high numbers of tennis court listings in recent years.

“Installing a private court is becoming more challenging,” Conisbee notes. “Many existing tennis courts have been replaced with new housing developments to meet growing residential demand.”

Unlike other amenities like swimming pools, tennis courts appeal to a niche group of buyers, making them harder to market to the general public.

But a good tennis court can be a drawcard for keen players who are willing to pay for the convenience of a court in their backyard.
