On the drive between Adelaide and the Kangaroo Island ferries, there’s a Mediterranean-style region that reveals stellar beaches, quaint towns and world-class wineries – enter the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Much like a charcuterie board served at one of the area’s renowned cellar doors, those lucky enough to call this region home hold the privilege of tasting a little bit of everything.

Residents of the diverse region are pampered by nature’s playground and surrounded by an assortment of leisurely pursuits, all while sitting on Adelaide’s southern doorstep.

“Fleurieu includes a scenic mix of vineyards, farmland, beautiful beaches and small country towns packed with history,” says Holly Freeland of Harcourts Wine Coast.

“On one hand, there are quaint townships where many original cottages are found, while on the other, the coastline is dotted with more of the architecturally designed contemporary homes.”

Adelaide buyers seeking holiday homes have always been attracted here, but Freeland says the region now attracts a growing number of buyers from NSW and Victoria.

“We have noticed incredible buyer demand with properties achieving high sale prices, sometimes in excess of $100,000 over the price guide, with auction clearance rates also increasing,” she says.

“Yes, our region has a relaxed way of life, but we also have everything we need at our fingertips, with plenty of schools and amenities to service a variety of demographics.”

Sisters Sarah Hall and Emma Read live in the region’s historic town of Willunga.

The creative duo behind Read & Hall not only sell vintage furniture and wares but also create coastal holiday houses including My Sister & The Sea cottage and beachfront Love & Mutiny.

“We enjoy living up the road from each other and being 10 minutes from the stunning coastline,” Read says.

“Fleurieu attracts a vast array of people, be it winemakers and growers or young families and retirees. The one thing we all have in common is our appreciation for good food and wine [and] a love of the beach.”

Hall and Read are part of a close-knit community and love the region’s beauty.

“We love to stroll down the Willunga Farmers Market on a Saturday morning, grabbing a coffee from the Willunga General Store on the way, then later head to Port Willunga beach for a swim,” Hall says.

“An ideal Sunday would involve tasting our way around favourites like Never Never Distilling Co and Down the Rabbit Hole winery – there’s just so much to see and do.”
