Just over 30 years after Nirvana’s debut album Bleach was released, the former home of lead singer Kurt Cobain and his wife, musician Courtney Love, has come up for sale.
The Seattle residence, built in 1902 and with four bedrooms and four bathrooms, was reportedly put on the market for $US7.5 million ($11.15 million) last month.
The listing notes that the 762-square-metre Queen Anne-styled house has an open floor plan and has been “completely updated throughout”, with garden and Lake Washington views on offer.
The home was bought by the couple in 1994 for $US1.485 million. Cobain was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the property in April that year.
Love went on to sell the home for $US2.895 million in June 1997. Records show it has since had a garage and retaining wall added.
Regarded as one of the pivotal bands in the Grunge movement of the late 1980s to ’90s, Nirvana was formed in 1987 in Washington state by Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, with drummer Dave Grohl joining in 1990 before going on to become lead singer of the Foo Fighters.
Their single Smells Like Teen Spirit from their second album, Nevermind, became a global hit, with the band sending more than 75 million records around the world.
They went on to produce a third studio album, In Utero, in 1993, with live album MTV Unplugged in New York released in November 1994 after Cobain’s death.
Love was lead singer of the band Hole, formed in 1989 with guitarist Eric Erlandson in Los Angeles. The band released three albums in the 1990s, with a fourth, Nobody’s Daughter, coming out in 2010. Love also branched out into acting, receiving critical acclaim for her role in 1996’s The People vs Larry Flynt.
Cobain and Love were married in 1992 in Hawaii, and their daughter, model Frances Bean Cobain, was born in 1993.
