Endearingly referred to as Freo by those who call it home, Fremantle is a jewel in Western Australia’s crown.

This lively port city captivates not only with its junction of the Swan River and the Indian Ocean but also with its historical allure, creative spirit and maritime roots.

The latest Domain House Price Report reveals Perth is one of only two capital cities where house prices are at a record high, along with Adelaide.

Fremantle’s idyllic traits have surely contributed to this, with East Fremantle’s median house price sitting at $1.41 million, a year-on-year increase of 10.6 per cent, and North Fremantle at $1.2 million, up 5.7 per cent.

Historic port, contemporary charm

Caporn Young Estate Agents partner Nikki Gogan has led the sales of many prized homes in the area. She credits its growth to its unique character and the diversity of its community.

“Fremantle is a cultural melting pot, attracting professionals, young families and students, all drawn by its unique charm,” she says.

“This diversity, marked by a shared enthusiasm for art, the environment and a relaxed lifestyle, distinctly defines our city.

“Fremantle is celebrated as a hub for food and nightlife, with popular spots like Emily Taylor and Nieuw Ruin boosting its credentials.

“These facets, coupled with convenient public transport options like the train line and ferry services to Rottnest Island, solidify its status as a highly desirable residential area.”

Artistic creativity

Perhaps Fremantle’s invigorating sea breeze inspires creativity, as it is a hub for gifted artists, performers and creators. Take, for example, local artist Anya Brock.

“I’ve always felt a creative pull towards Fremantle,” she says. “As a teenager, I’d often find myself on the bus heading here to op shop and buy music from Mills Records.

“Even though I’ve since lived in Sydney, Melbourne, Byron Bay and London, each time I find my way back again.”

Brock recently opened a new gallery at FOMO, a popular destination for art, architecture, culinary delights and retail.

Here, she showcases her vibrant artwork celebrating local flora and fauna, further expressing her love for the area.

“Some of my favourite places to go are Ooh Coffee in North Fremantle, La Cabana for an excellent margarita, and Leighton Beach for the bluest water and whitest sand,” Brock says.

“I also think there’s something special about being a part of a port city – it’s always fascinating to watch the giant ships carrying bright containers come and go.”
