Bordered by the shimmering Corio Bay and serving as the gateway to the captivating Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula, Geelong’s natural beauty is unmistakable. Conveniently close to Melbourne and a quick trip from the surfers’ paradise of Torquay, Victoria’s second-largest city was always destined to become hot property.

Its streets brim with renowned eateries and bustling breweries, solidifying its reputation as a foodie’s paradise. Adding a layer of creative energy is its thriving arts scene, showcased in venues like the Geelong Art Gallery and the Geelong Arts Centre. Not forgetting its deep roots in AFL culture, with the historic Geelong Cats calling it home, fostering community spirit and shared pride.

Change is as good as a holiday

Jim Cross, principal of McGrath Geelong, reflects on the city’s evolution, depicting a resilient market amid a backdrop of change and growth.

“Geelong has witnessed a significant cultural shift, becoming a prime location for families seeking a fulfilling lifestyle,” Cross says. “The city has seen among the highest rates of population and capital growth in the country over the past five years, all the while offering high-quality housing and fantastic facilities.”

Domain’s latest House Price Report backs up Geelong’s growing appeal, with a median house price of $938,500, marking a 0.6 per cent annual increase and a significant 22.7 per cent rise in five years.

“The city’s top-tier educational offerings, including the prestigious Geelong Grammar School, have always attracted families,” Cross adds. “This, combined with its burgeoning status, makes it an excellent place for both living and investing.”

A creative community to call your own

Photographer Madeleine Burke moved to the area five years ago to live with her partner, Simon. Initially plotting a future return to Melbourne, Burke was quickly won over by Geelong.

“It proved to be a great middle-ground for us, with Simon working down the coast and my commutes to Melbourne,” Burke says. “I’m deeply thankful for Geelong’s creative circles and for providing us a wonderful setting to start our family.”

Geelong invites newcomers like Burke to settle in, whether through morning swims or a gentle kayak on the water, a brisk walk along the bay’s many tracks or through the Geelong Botanic Gardens, or perhaps a twilight sail or a Saturday race at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

“Raising our daughter Frankie here has been so easy, with everything just a short drive away and free from the hustle of city traffic,” says Burke. “Some of my favourite dining spots are Felix Restaurant, The Arborist, and Centra, though I’m always up for some delicious ramen takeout from Sober.”
