Griffith’s leafy streets and central location have always made it a popular choice for owner-occupiers.

However, Eddie Senatore discovered that it’s also an attractive investment opportunity.

He had owned the neighbouring house since 1990. When 10a Landsborough Street came on the market six years ago he decided to buy it for his parents to live in.

His parents ended up building a new home in Coombs. However, he kept the property and says it has been an excellent investment.

“We’ve been really lucky to have great tenants for the duration of the ownership, including the current tenants,” Eddie says.

“We’ve had a professional couple and a family there, they tend to stay there for a long period of time and make it their own.”

Eddie said part of the appeal of the circa-1950s house is that it has retained its original character.

“Its original features stand there loud and proud,” Eddie says.

“It has a nice wide front yard which allows the original features to stand out.”

Picture rails, sash windows and extra high ceilings are complemented by the tastefully renovated kitchen and bathrooms.

The three-bedroom house also features solid blackbutt timber floors and ducted gas heating.

Eddie has since moved to a townhouse at Kingston Foreshore, but he says there is something special about the suburb of Griffith.

“One of the beauties of the area is its community feel,” Eddie says.

“Young families are setting up in the suburb, everything’s within walking distance, people are on their pushbikes and the local shops are really well connected to people in their community.”

4 Phillip Avenue, Downer

A hunt for a home with character led Lucy Dakin and her partner Nev to this three-bedroom house in Downer.

Beyond its unassuming facade, Dakin discovered large rooms, interesting angles and light-filled interiors.

“I do like that it’s a bit interesting and different,” Dakin says.

“The sun absolutely pours in in the winter. It’s nice and toasty on a sunny winter morning.”

Dakin has lived at the home for 20 years on and off and has spent the last three years in the property.

While the home’s footprint remains unchanged it has been extensively renovated – an updated kitchen and bathroom, central heating, airconditioning, French doors, new windows and beautifully landscaped gardens.

A separate multipurpose room at the front of the home has been used as a personal training and yoga studio.

“We set that up ourselves and it’s been fantastic,” Lucy says.

“If you weren’t running a business it would be a fantastic entertaining area.”

When Dakin first moved in she loved that she could get to the city within a short bus ride. The new owners will soon enjoy close proximity to the light rail.
