Gringegalgona: Why this Southern Grampians region offers idillic rural Australian life

The crown jewel of this historic enclave is the Gringegalgona Homestead.

In Victoria’s Southern Grampians region, Gringegalgona embodies the serene allure of rural Australian heritage.

A four-hour drive west from Melbourne, this small locality of fewer than 50 residents feels worlds away, with stories deeply embedded in its pastoral history.

The crown jewel of this historic enclave is the Gringegalgona Homestead, constructed in 1873-74 for Duncan Robertson, a visionary pastoralist whose estate once spanned over 16,000 hectares.

Imprinted with Robertson’s Scottish roots, the homestead blends European elegance with the rugged beauty of Victoria’s hinterlands.

Though the area has bid farewell to once-bustling tennis, football and cricket clubs, the homestead remains as resilient as the land itself.

After decades of private ownership, the homestead stands poised for its next chapter, coming to market for the first time since 1940 through Dominic Romeo of Circa Heritage and Lifestyle Property Specialists.

“There’s a powerful sense of arrival as you approach this grand two-storey mansion, which commands its position atop a rise and dominates the landscape,” Romeo says.

“Its mid-Victorian Italianate design, defined by its symmetry and imposing scale, remains intact.”

It presents an extraordinary chance to embrace a piece of history for a cherished family home, an elegant weekend retreat, or a unique accommodation venture.

Romeo says the property is undoubtedly one of the Western District’s finest.

“With frontage to Bryan Creek and well-maintained paddocks, the property also has two dams and an established garden with mature English trees, hedges, and fruit trees,” he says.

“Expansive lawns feature Victoria’s only known trio of lawn turning circles, complemented by original stone stables and a coach house.”

A new era of creativity

Zooming out to the wider region, the Southern Grampians captivates with its mix of rugged mountains, rolling farmland and cascading waterfalls.

Agriculture runs through its veins, encompassing a community that fuels a food and wine scene.

At the heart of this thriving landscape is Hamilton, the cultural epicentre and home to the Hamilton Gallery.

“Our gallery serves as a gathering place for creative expression, education and shared history,” says director Joshua White.

“It’s where people come together, fostering a sense of identity and belonging.

Hamilton is under an hour's drive away.

“We aim to create a space that attracts visitors by supporting local artists and emerging creatives, boosting tourism and the local economy.”

An exciting horizon beckons for a New Hamilton Gallery to be built on the current gallery site, with the Southern Grampians Shire Council recently inviting Australian and international architects to tender for its design.

“The new gallery aspires to elevate the arts within a regional context,” White says.

“By establishing an iconic landmark, we seek to boost visitor appeal, foster local pride, and attract young professionals, families, and retirees who value history, innovation, and the profound beauty of regional Victoria.”
