Famed for its exquisite white beaches, a kaleidoscope of coral and marine life, and perpetual warm weather, Hamilton Island is the jewel in the Whitsunday region’s crown.

It’s geographically gifted, not least for having the Great Barrier Reef at its doorstep.

With a population of around 1300 people, it’s one of the country’s largest resort islands, with remarkable beauty found both above and beneath the water.

Residents here go from A to B in golf buggies rather than cars – or, better yet, by boat – likely identifying as ocean lovers, island hoppers and marine enthusiasts, to name but a few.

Switch to island time

Given the island’s holiday persona, says Liam Kearney of Hamilton Island Real Estate, it’s only fitting that the most significant demographic in the area would be lifestyle investors.

He notes how these buyers take advantage of a tried and tested mix of personal use and holiday letting, allowing for a positive income base when they are not enjoying their island getaway themselves.

“Buyers appreciate the slower pace of life that Hamilton Island promotes,” Kearney says. “They enjoy partaking in the endless activities on both land and sea, whether it’s experiencing all manners of beach adventures like sailing or snorkelling, enjoying our international golf course, or having a scenic meal or drink at sundown.”

As an island with commuting residents and constant tourists coming and going, Hamilton Island profits from being the only island in the Great Barrier Reef with its own commercial airport, affording direct access from the likes of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Cairns.

“In my opinion, this really sets Hamilton Island apart, as, unlike other destinations, once you fly in, there’s little to no more travel required,” Kearney says. “It’s simply a matter of collecting your bags and, 10 minutes later, you’re relaxing in your property.

“This allows people to switch to island time immediately.”

Sail the days away

Also championing and cherishing that blissful island life is Jessica Godsall, who moved to Hamilton Island in 2007 to complete a nine-month practical for her university degree, majoring in tourism and hospitality.

Now on her fourth residency, she has been back for two-and-a-half years.

“I have travelled over 70 countries and worked in some of the most beautiful tourism destinations in the world, from Banff in Canada to superyachts throughout the Caribbean, yet I can still say that Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays hold my heart,” Godsall says.

“Living in this tropical paradise is the ultimate lifestyle goal, and I’m especially proud to be part of this community and its appreciation for life.”

When asked to share her favourite pastimes in the region, Godsall describes taking a boat out on weekends and enjoying the astonishingly white sands and crystal-clear blue waters of Whitehaven Beach.

“We love to fish for the catch of the day for dinner and discover some amazing campgrounds that are easily accessible by boat [and where] you can enjoy a night out under the stars on your own private beach,” she says.

“The island also has some beautiful walking trails, with my favourite being the South East Head walk, and the sunsets at Bommie Deck or One Tree Hill are even more reasons why I feel lucky to call this place home.”
