A buyer with gumption has purchased a home featured in one of history’s scariest movies.

The family home from the Steven Spielberg-written Poltergeist is changing hands for $US1.28 million ($AU1.91 million).

Despite the jump scares in the movie, released in 1982, the property in sunny California is “clean” of spirits or portals to hell, agents assured buyers.

“For the first time in 45 years, the legendary house from the movie Poltergeist is back on the market!” the listing, on US-based marketplace Realtor, says.

“Yes this is the home where much of the first movie of the series was filmed but this house is clean. Seriously, it is! Well-loved by its original owners, this charming four bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home is ready to welcome a new family, without the ghostly antics, we promise!”

The movie plot centres on a suburban American family – the Freelings – who are being terrorised by malevolent ghosts, and who kidnap their young daughter. It has the creepy, seminal tagline: “They’re here”.

Fans will recognise rooms in the first of the three movies in the retro franchise.

At 4267 Roxbury St, Simi Valley, the address served as the Freeling home and has a poolside terrace, classic salmon drapes, red wallpaper, and a pale timber kitchen, where spirits messed with the dining chairs.

The Academy Award-nominated movie made an icon of the late Heather O’Rourke, a beatific, blonde-haired, blue-eyed youngster, who played the haunted daughter.

Los Angeles’ based agency Equity Union handled the deal.
