Bywong may be able to safely claim it’s the byword in rural charm, especially with its enviable proximity to Canberra.

This unique settlement with gold mining origins is now characterised by large lifestyle properties and is just 30 minutes from the Canberra CBD.

Mark Johnstone of Ray White Canberra, who lists this week’s Bywong feature property, says the Brooks Road location perfectly showcases the appeal of this rural location.

“It has it all – a unique parkland-type setting among cleared pasture and natural bush. There’s plenty of space,” he says. “You have a beautifully restored homestead along with some exciting potential income-producing options – including a successful Airbnb cottage and an old cellar door building that offers the perfect entertaining venue.

Johnstone says interest has come from young families and retirees looking for a lifestyle change with income potential.

“The country lifestyle has significant appeal, particularly with such close proximity to Canberra,” he says.

Campbell Jones of Blackshaw Manuka, who lists an Or Try These Bywong property, says a sense of community is another drawcard.

“The planners have introduced a greenways network that’s used by local residents for walking and riding,” he says. “It also helpfully provides convenient access to neighbours and that’s a great initiative in terms of building a sense of community.”

Jones says buyers are also attracted to the great value that Bywong offers.

“They often weigh it up against options in neighbouring Sutton – they then realise they can really maximise their buying power in Bywong,” he says.

The name “Bywong” is believed to derive from an Indigenous word for “big hill”. It was the site of a late 19th-century gold mining settlement that attracted up to 300 prospectors.

Bywong offers many lifestyle properties characterised by manageable landholdings with that sense of space the country provides. And that’s a magnet, particularly for children with trail bikes or ponies.

Canberra is literally down the road, with suburbs such as Watson just 20 minutes away. It’s an easy commute to workplaces, schools, health services, and broader amenities that enhance the practicality of rural living.

There’s nothing like a deep breath of clean, country air, and it will taste even sweeter for the buyer of this outstanding Bywong property.

This rural haven sits on some 13 hectares of natural bush and grazing pasture with two permanent creeks.

It offers the best of both worlds: luxury country living and a roll call of income potential – all within 30 minutes of the Canberra CBD.

Here’s what’s on offer: a fully renovated homestead, a separate cottage, an indoor-outdoor venue, significant property infrastructure and – in the back pocket – sub-division potential.

A courtyard leads to the homestead’s formal entry and a floor plan that delivers about 300 square metres of living. There are two bedrooms at one end, a central living-kitchen-dining hub and a private main suite. Upstairs includes a multipurpose space – which could become a fourth bedroom – with a balcony.

The separate Pine Tree Cottage operates as a sought-after Airbnb that brings in approximately $100,000 per annum. The fully renovated dwelling offers a living room, a main bedroom with ensuite, three further bedrooms, a retro-style kitchen and a covered outdoor entertaining area.

The third building was once part of Brooks Creek Winery. It offers a bar, tap beer equipment, a cool room, toilets and a storeroom. It is perfectly suited as an entertainment venue.

Property infrastructure includes dams, a bore, new septic systems, potable water tanks, firefighting water tanks, a machinery shed, and an established orchard.
